Bite-Sized Baked French Toast

BREAKFAST IS SERVED.  There's something magical about 'going out for breakfast' when you're a kid. For me, it was Sambo's. Way, way back. When your dressed "up" to go "out". Pitcher holders featuring three flavors of syrups and large, rounded scoops of whipped Tiger butter. Back then, French Toast was made with good old, refined-and-bleached-white-flour breadNothing could beat it.  FAST FORWARD:  Times have changed and so has French Toast.

SLICE. POUR. CHILL. BAKE.  For the bite-sized toast, a bag of "baby baguettes" caught my eye at Trader Joe's. A simple egg, cream, cinnamon and vanilla mixture is poured over the slices and chilled overnight. In the morning, sprinkle toasted almonds atop and bake - skillet free. To see the round-up of BAKED  French Toast, visit the round-up at BAKED SUNDAY MORNINGS.

If you're a stickler for going by the book, you'll want to make the BAKED raspberry sauce as per the recipe. I'm a stickler for tradition. Nothing beats syrup on my new favorite French Toast - with your choice of maple, blueberry or strawberry.

Oh my gosh...I opened your post and say your photo and am seriously hungry for these again...and I want mine to look just like yours. Fabulous! I actually like the idea that this recipe can be put together the night before...perfect for a holiday breakfast. Yours is perfect.

I could really go for some of that right now! When I was younger we NEVER went out for breakfast and I was always so jealous of friends whose families went out for breakfast every Sunday. But then the cost of that for them was spending an hour or so in church so who had it better? But the LUXURY of being able to choose from amongst THREE different syrups was such a draw. I still always chose maple but still. 2 syrups? Can't get that at home, can you?

I am a traditionalist also, Mike, and had to go with the maple syrup. I loved your 'action' photo with the honey corn muffins that I had to try one for my post. I have not heard of Sambo's, but it looks a lot like the Big Boy chain they have in the South. Many memories going there for breakfast growing up. Love your plate and your french toast looks perfect for a cold, almost winter, morning!

I also love going out for breakfast. There is something more fun about going out for breakfast than other meals. Glad this brought you back. I enjoyed this, although I thought the sauce was the best part.

LOVE the baby baguettes! I will have to look for them when I am next at Trader Joe's. And I'm with you. Nothing beats maple syrup! Your toast looks scrumptious! : )

Ah.. a trip down memory lane. We had a Sambo's nearby and it was the go-to place for breakfast. French toast is the best 'go-to' breakfast food possible. I love this twist!

I have never seen baby baguettes before, and I love the idea of using these for French toast! Your photo is just gorgeous!

blogger at my first attempt at a comment :( so I'll try again.

Love that French toast, just perfect for a special breakfast. Although I used to love trying those brightly colored syrups when we ate breakfast out, at home it's maple syrup all the way!

Oh, I love the idea of bite-sized anything, and baby baguettes as well! Looks just wonderful.
