BAKED'S finale for 2012, Classic Shortbread with Fleur de Sel, is something simple, short and definitely homemade. Aside from the traditional shortbread ingredients of butter, sugar (with BAKED'S choice of either confectioner or granular sugar), an egg yolk and a dash of salt, they include a small amount of rice flour. Rice? Ok, I'll give it a shot. Tender, buttery cookies that stand up to whatever shape you choose. Most shortbread recipes spread, making me wonder why rolling and cutting in cute, fanciful shapes is even necessary. These heavenly squares, sprinkled with fleur de sel, put any store-bought shortbread to shame.
To get the recipe, venture on over to BAKED SUNDAY MORNINGS.

I love your cutout shapes. You're so right about the way most other shortbread cookies spread.
Have a fabulous New Year!
I'm never motivated to make shortbread (though I love it) precisely because they spread! I must try this secret ingredient, because yours look like they came out of a box (and I mean that in a complimentary way). Happy New Year!
Cut outs! They look awesome! And I love the pic of them with the tea cup. Just beautiful.
I love that you went with cutouts. That's what I love so much about being part of this group....seeing what others come up with.
That's too funny about the Walker shortbread! Classic!
Happy Baking in the New Year.
I just love the shape. I think they are even more appealing like that and I am definitely going o do that next time! Happy New Year!
My sentiments exactly...store bought does not compare! I was thinking about those Walker shortbreads as I baked today's shortbread and thinking that our tender cookies would not make it to the door in a plastic bag tied with a bow. Love the "cut-out" idea...they baked perfectly. Happy New Year.
Too funny! Your shortbread looks so perfect and I love the contrast again the beautiful blue teacup and saucer. Gorgeous photos, Mike. Happy New Year! XO
That was supposed to be "against" the blue tea cup...Sheesh! ;)
Mike...your shortbread cookies look absolutely picture perfect! I think you could put Walker's out of business! I hope you have a fabulous New Year! : )
I love that little fluted square shape, so perfect for shortbread. Great picture, nice job! :)
Ooh, I want that cookie cutter. I'll have to look for some square ones. Thanks for the reminder about these cookies--I bought rice flour a while back so I could make them, then promptly forgot about it. The other day I was wondering why I had rice flour in the pantry. =) Now I need to make a batch of these cookies before I forget again.
I must buy one of those little cutters for this recipe! They look so pretty!
